Vocational Rehabilitation

Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant

I began working as a Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant in 1979. In 1983, I started my own business, Absolute Rehabilitation. This business grew to 15 employees and I functioned as a consultant and administrator. Our firm successfully provided all services mandated by California Workers' Compensation Vocational Rehabilitation law including vocational counseling, evaluation, assessment, plan development and placement.

One of my special interests is disability management. In the early 90s, I began attending seminars on disability management, the ADA, and ergonomics. It only seemed logical to me that the concepts of DM, such as early intervention, lessen the many costs associated with injury on the job. Application of ergonomic principles not only prevent injury but facilitate return to work following injury or disability.

In 1993, I sold my business and moved to Colorado to obtain a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation. My dissertion was titled: The Effect of Age upon Services and Outcomes in California's Workers' Compensation Vocational Rehabilitation Program. That is a mouth full but a 175 page document needs a long title! I learned a great deal from the process of conducting research on a system I had experienced for so many years as a practitioner.

I completed my Ph.D. in record time and was hired in 1995 at the University of Northern Colorado as an Assistant Professor. After a year, I decided to move back to my home in Sacramento. My parents were older and needed me so this was the right decision, although, it meant giving up an opportunity for a tenure track position at UNC. Fortunately, I was able to obtain work as a part-time lecturer in 1996 in 3 departments at CSUS where I usually taught 12 units per semester.

Since 1996, I have also provided return to work services to large employers in the Sacramento area related to Workers' Compensation and ADA issues. For example, I frequently create a job analysis or description that outlines the essential functions of the job or a video job analyses to facilitate a time motion study. Employers I have assisted include Hewlett Packard, Agilent Technologies, Sacramento City Unified School District, EDD, and Coherent. My many years of experience working with people with disabilities and my knowledge of systems and laws enables me to provide the expertise necessary to assist in resolving difficult cases.
